ATENVELDT COLLEGE OF HERALDS 30 July 2006, A.S. XLI
Letter of Intent Kingdom of Atenveldt

Unto Elisabeth de Rossignol, Laurel; Margaret MacDuibhshithe, Pelican; Jeanne Marie Lacroix, Wreath; and the commenting Members of the College of Arms,

Greetings from Marta as tu Mika-Mysliwy, Parhelium Herald!

Please note the following correction to the 28 June 2006 Atenveldt Letter of Intent:

                17. Ysabeau Bourbeau: BADGE RESUBMISSION from Laurel, March 2006

(Fieldless) A bottle bendwise sinister argent entwined by an eel azure.

The blazon is correct. However, the emblazon included was incorrect. That which appears here is the correct emblazon.

The Atenveldt College of Heralds requests the consideration and registration of the following names and armory with the College of Arms.

Please note: Unless specifically stated, the submitter will accept any spelling and grammar corrections; all assistance is appreciated.

1. Æthelflæda Boscher: NEW NAME

The standard Old English form of the given name is Æthelflæd. “Anglo-Saxon Women's Names from Royal Charters,” Marieke van de Dal (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/marieke/anglosaxonfem/ ) doesn’t have this precise spelling, although the demonstrated Æthelflede, Æþælfledæ and Ethelflede shown there suggest the possibility of a terminal -a for the name, in addition to various combinations of th/þ with æ/e; a number of other given names without a terminal -a in that paper show the terminal -a as a spelling variation.

Boscher is an English surname dated to 1221 (Reaney and Wilson, 3rd edition, p. 55, s.n. Bosher).

The client is most interested in the sound of the name.

2. Æthelflæda Boscher: NEW DEVICE

Per fess sable and checky azure and argent, in chief an hourglass fesswise argent, the glass per fess argent and Or.

Only the glass portion of the hourglass is argent and Or; the frame itself is argent.

3. Áine MacQuinn: NAME RESUBMISSION from Laurel, December 2005 (originally submitted as Áine O'Shaughnessy)

The original name submission Áine O'Shaughnessy, was returned for aural conflict with Aine ni Sheachnasaigh, registered April 1997: “Past precedent holds that the Gaelic particle ni and the English O' are both too close in sound to inghean ui; in this case, it also means that ni and O' are also in conflict.”

Áine is a Middle Irish Gaelic feminine given name, dated 1169 through 1468, according to “Dated Names Found in Ó Corráin & Maguire's Irish Names,” Mari Elspeth nic Bryan ( http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/mari/ocm/ ).

(Mac)Quin(n) is undated but found in MacLysaght, 6th edition, p. 252. Pertinent commentary by the CoA for the name Ailleann Mac Quyn, registered September 2005: “Submitted as Ailleann Mac Quinn, the documentation for the patronymic strongly suggests that it is a modern form...it mixes an Irish Gaelic given name with an Anglicized byname... Reaney and Wilson, A Dictionary of English Surnames s.n. Quine, lists Luke Mac Quyn in 1403...” A slight spelling modification to Áine Mac Quyn would still have the one step from period practice for mixing an Irish Gaelic element with an Anglicized element, but any issues with temporal disparity would be resolved.

The name should be clear of Aine MacQuillan (reg. 07/2001); clear of Aine ingen Fhinn (reg. 12/2004) with the 04/2002 Cover Letter stating: "inghean (pronounced "IN-yen" or "NEE-yen") does not conflict with mac (pronounced "mahk")."; and clear of Anne Mary Quinn (reg. 11/2000), by removal of the element Mary.

The client is most interested in the language/culture of the name and wishes the name authentic for Irish language/culture.

4. Áine MacQuinn: DEVICE RESUBMISSION from Laurel, December 2005

Per pale argent and Or, a mullet purpure charged with a triquetra per pale Or and argent, a chief doubly arched purpure.

The original device submission, Argent, a tree couped between in fess two brown dogs couchant respectant proper., was returned for conflict. This is a complete redesign.

5. Anastasia filia Maguch: NEW NAME

The name is documented as a 13th C. written Latinized Hungarian name. All documentation comes from Árpád-kori személynévtár (Name-list from the Árpád-age), Fehértói Katalin (Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, 2004, ISBN 963 05 8169 8).

Anastasia is found as a feminine given name dated to 1261 “Dyonisio caluo filio Petri...filiam suam nomine Anastasiam, and 1276 “Cosma de Babatino Colocensis diocesis...Anastasia uxor mea” (p. 63, s.n. Anastasia).

Maguch is a masculine given name, as well as part of the name of a clan or tribe, dated to 1283 “comiti Maguch filio Maguch,” and 1291 “...Maguch et Ladizlaus fily Jurk” (p. 507, s.n. Maguch).

The construction X filia Y, meaning “X daughter of Y,” is a standard Latin name form; it is shown on p. 50 s.n. Agnes, dated to 1249, “Agnes filia Petri.” The 1283 Maguch citation shows that Maguch was treated as indeclinable, so that the genitive form of the name is the same as the nominative form.

The client is most interested in the meaning of the name, “Anastasia, daughter of Maguch.”

6. Bjorn Krom Hakenberg: DEVICE RESUBMISSION from Laurel, July 2003

Vert, on a bend sinister cotised argent between a sheaf of tulips slipped and a shear of arrows inverted Or, a demi-bear affronty palewise, paws outstretched, sable.

The name was registered July 2003.

The original device submission, Vert, on a bend sinister argent between a sheaf of tulips slipped and a sheaf of arrows inverted Or a demi-bear affronty palewise, paws outstretched, sable., was returned for conflict with Elisa of Thescorre, Vert, on a bend sinister argent between two open books Or a rapier sable. Quoting from the LoAR of June 2001, "A sheaf is considered a single charge, therefore there is [... a] CD for changing the type of the secondary charges." The original submission changed the type but not the number of secondary charges.

Cotisng the bend sinister provides the second CD to clear the conflict with Elisa’s armory.

The use of the patronymic particle verch, “daughter of,” is also found in the citation.

It seems that in the evolution of anchors, “...Curved arms began to replace straight arms in anchors early in the 19th century...”, according to the Encyclopaedia Britannica Online ( http://www.britannica.com/ ), under Anchor. The large amount of curvature of the anchor's arms is a post period innovation. Period anchors had much straighter arms. The client will be informed of this.
