(administered by the Brickbat Herald)

1 August 2000, A.S. XXXV

Kingdom of Atenveldt

Unto Their Royal Majesties Mathias and Sarolta; Lady Isabel d'Avron, Aten Principal Herald; the Heralds in the Atenveldt College of Heralds; and to All Whom These Presents Come,

Greetings from Marta as tu Mika-Mysliwy, Brickbat Herald!

This is the August 2000 internal Atenveldt Letter of Intent. It precedes the external LoI that will contain the following submissions, asking questions of submitters and local heralds who have worked with them; if these questions are not addressed, the submission may be returned by the Atenveldt College of Heralds. You are encouraged to comment upon these submissions, even if you fear that you might not have enough "experience" to offer your opinion. Please have commentary to me by 25 August. I accept electronic commentary: brickbat@nexiliscom.com.

Heraldic Consultation Tables: There will be an Heraldic Consultation Table at the following events, bringing a number of name resources, and accepting submissions: Kingdom Arts and Sciences (Windale); Kingdom Collegium (Saturday, Mons Tonitrus); and Southern Crusade (Saturday, Mons Tonitrus/Tir Ysgithr). You are welcomed and encouraged to spend time at any of these Tables, helping people determine name and armory submissions--it is a great place to brush up on "book heraldry."

Pictorial Dictionaries: I've still got most of the local copies of the Pictorial Dictionary; I will try to distribute them at upcoming events (including Kingdom Arts in Windale). If you plan to attend an event in the future and we can arrange to get your group's copy to you, please let me know (several heralds already have-thank you!).

Submissions Website: Woo hoo! (To quote Homer Simpson...) An online site for current and archived Internal and External Letters of Intent, in addition to other armorial and name resource goodies, is in the works! It should be up and running by 15 August, and I hope it will encourage more than us elite few(!) to see the state of book heraldry in the kingdom, to comment on current submissions, and to spark an interest in "this side" of heraldry. I've emailed a number of local heralds already, asking if they would be content to download their copies of the monthly Internal LoI from the site and am repeating that question here. This will save some amount on postage and printing, although hard copies of IloIs will be mailed to local heralds without computer access, in addition to local herald office copies of Letters of Notification for submissions in local areas. Commentary on current internal LoI's, suggestions for the site, and questions about armory and names can be directed to the site via atensubmissions@nexiliscom.com. (The above email address for me remains viable as well.)

But Where Are the Submissions? Although we've done a lot of consultation at my local monthly meeting, I haven't received any submissions this month from Tir Ysgithr (or anywhere else!). A few resubmissions were added to the August LoI because they were primarily returned for redrawing by the Laurel office. Guess we've hit the summer doldrums-so this will be a short letter (yay!)-nevertheless, please feel free to drop me a line.

The following submissions appear in the 1 August 2000 Atenveldt Letter of Intent (emblazons in the 1 July 2000 Internal Letter of Intent):

Beartlai mac Mathghamhain (Atenveldt): NEW NAME

We did locate Beartlai in the documentation provided but have not been able to demonstrate it in more reputable resources; it was decided to include it in the LoI and ask the CoA for help in documenting it or suggesting a more period form of the name.

Eduard Gostomski (Tir Ysgithr): NEW NAME and DEVICE (Per pale azure and gules, a cross formy argent and a bordure ermine.)

Eduard Gostomski: NEW BADGE (Per pale azure and argent, a cross formy counterchanged and a bordure invected gules).

Elizabeth Edwin (Burning Sands): NEW NAME and DEVICE (Or, in pale a rhinoceros' head erased purpure and two roses chevronwise inverted gules, slipped and leaved vert.)

John the Idiota (Tir Ysgithr): NEW BADGE ((fieldless) A wolverine rampant argent.)

Kyra Kai ferch Madoc (Tir Ysgithr): BADGE TRANSFER and BADGE RELEASE

Lachlan McBean of Kinchyle (Atenveldt): NEW NAME and NEW BADGE (Sable, a tankand bendwise argent, foaming Or.)

Sebastiana Gerynot Fanelli (Atenveldt): DEVICE RESUBMISSION from Laurel 5/2000 (Per pale gules and purpure, on a pale Or between two rapiers inverted proper, a jester's bauble proper, staffed bendy sinister argent and alternately gules and purpure and hooded quarterly purpure and gules.)

The original submission was returned for tincture violation and redrawing to avoid a potential conflict. The emblazon appears in this letter.

Temur Arslan (Tir Ysgithr): DEVICE RESUBMISSION from Laurel 2/2000 (Or, in pale a lion couchant contourny and two skulls in fess sable, a bordure gules.)

The emblazon appears in this letter; the original submission was returned for use of period charges in an undocumented manner.

Yvonett de Navarra (Tir Ysgithr): NEW NAME and DEVICE (Quarterly purpure and sable, a unicorn's head couped within an orle argent.)

The following submissions were held or returned for the following reasons:

Beartlai mac Mathghamhain: NEW DEVICE (Gules, on a saltire Or between four flames proper, bases to center, a grenade overall bendwise sinister sable, enflamed gules, between four Celtic crosses palewise sable.)

A lot of folks looked at this device and it was the consensus to return the submission for some amount of redesign. From any distance, the tertiary charge looks like a fireball, since the flames on the field are so close to the saltire and are oriented as a fireball would be. (A fireball would be a fine charge to use.) The "sparkler" fuse completely disappears on the saltire. The flames are incorrectly drawn. I think that the "idea" has merit, only it needs to be worked into a design that is more heraldic.

RETURNED for Tincture Violation, unidentifiability of charge.

John Turner (Atenveldt): NEW NAME

HELD pending modification of name (the current submission is identical to his legal name).

I remain,

Marta as tu Mika-Mysliwy
