ATENVELDT COLLEGE OF HERALDS 30 March 2013, A.S. XLVII
LETTER OF PRESENTATION Kingdom of Atenveldt

Unto Their Royal Majesties Tristan and Damiana; Master Seamus, Aten Principal Herald; the Heralds in the Atenveldt College of Heralds; and to All Whom These Presents Come,

Greetings of from Marta as tu Mika-Mysliwy, Brickbat Herald and Parhelium Herald for the Kingdom of Atenveldt!

This is the March 2013 Atenveldt Letter of Presentation. Please have commentary to me by 15 April 2013. Thank you!

The next Heraldry Hut will be Friday, 19 April, beginning at 7:30 PM. At this time, we are planning to have an Heraldic Consultation Table at Kingdom Collegium in June (held in the Barony of Sundragon).

Where to Post In-Kingdom Commentary: Letters of Presentation will continue to be posted on the atensubmissions.nexiliscom.com website, commenters should look for them on the OSCAR site in order to make timely commentary. OSCAR is now set up to show Letters of Presentation (known there as Internal Letters of Intent or ILoI), and comments can be posted there directly – you do NOT have to create a separate email/document for your thoughts. It is quick and easy, and you can see what fellow heralds have to say. Even if you're unsure about commenting, this is the place to see the submission process in action – at least the portion after the client hands the submission packet to his/her herald. LoPs are there to catch the conflicts and tweak submissions in-kingdom to correct them, clear up questions, and give them the greatest possibility of being registered once they appear in a Letter of Intent.

Local heralds must remember to send submissions accepted by their hand in a timely manner as well (i.e., within one month of receiving a submissions packet). If you cannot connect with me at an event (very likely) or attend Heraldry Hut, submissions need to be mailed within one month (IMPORTANT!) of a local herald receiving them, unless there is a valid reason for return at the local level. My address: Linda Miku, 2527 E. 3rd Street, Tucson AZ 85716.

Submissions Website: You can send electronic commentary on the most recent LoPs/internal LoIs through the site, in addition to any questions you might have. Current submission forms (the ONLY forms that can be used) can be found on the site, along with guidelines for painlessly filling out the forms. Please let your local populace know about the site, too: atensubmissions.nexiliscom.com.

Please consider the following submissions for the April 2013 Atenvelt Letter of Intent:

Aetia of Atenveldt (BoAtenveldt): NEW NAME and DEVICE

Argent, a brown owl displayed proper, on a chief triangular azure a demi-sun issuant from the line of division Or.

Aetia is a female given name found in “Common Names of the Aristocracy in the Roman Empire During the 6th and 7th Centuries, “ Berret Chavez, http://heraldry.sca.org/laurel/names/byzantine/PLRE_fem_names.html. Atenveldt is the name of the client's home barony and kingdom. She desires a female name.

When I was working with another client a few years ago, we were unable to find any proper brown owl that was a uniform brown color: a lighter belly seemed to be the general rule. I don't know if a “proper” bird or beast that doesn't have brown as a default color (e.g., a skunk or a zebra) can be blazoned as brown proper. An owl displayed is one step from period practice.

Jenny Wren (Granite Mountain): NEW NAME

The name is English Jenny is a female given name. It stands alone from the “formal” Jennifer as Jenny Adam, d. 1588, and Jenny Dompan, d. 1594. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/J8X8-9TP and https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/J84X-TY4
Wrenne is dated to 1275 as Wrenne. Chreitian Wren is dated 1552 christening-1552 death in
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JQ98-Z29
This makes a nice late-period English name. The client desires a female name; she will not accept Major or Minor changes to the name.

My biggest concern is the sound of the name Jenny Wren. It's the common name for several types of brown wrens, and it's a pretty famous character in Dickens' Our Mutual Friend ("the doll's dressmaker"), and it's a song (not a huge one, but one nonetheless) by the Beatles.

Jocelyn le Coi (Tir Ysgithr): NEW NAME CHANGE from Jocelyn Playndeamours

The current name was registered August 2012; if the new name is registered, the old one is to be released.

Jocelyn is a male English name dated to 1199 with the spelling Jocelin (Withycombe, 3rd edition, pp. 177-178 s.n. Jocelyn). The Suffolk Feet of Fines (http://archive.org/details/cu31924029784992) dates <Robert de broc v. Jocelyn of All Saints in Cheventon> to 4-5 John (~1203-04). le Coi is a surname deated to 1203 in Reaney and Wilson 3rd edition, p. 114 s.n. Coy. The client doesn't care about the gender of the name and is most interested in the sound and the spelling (le Coi) of the name. She will not accept Major changes to the name.

Sveinbiorn Halbiornson (BoAteveldt): NEW DEVICE

Per pale azure and gules, an annulet interlaced with a triquetra argent and a bordure argent semy of increscents sable.

The name was registered August 2012.

Vanora O'Davorean (Sundragon): NEW NAME and DEVICE

Per pall inverted Or, gules and sable, two bears combattant counterchanged and an artist's paint brush Or.

Vanora is said to be the local name for Queen Guinivere (Historic Scenes in Perthshire, William Marshall, http://books.google.com/books?id=kP4HAAAAQAAJ&q=Vanora#v=snippet&q=Vanora&f=false). Arthur's queen is also mentioned by this name in an article on Picts by Stuart McHardy, http://www.electricscotland.com/history/articles/picts.htm. Davoren is found in “16th & 17th Century Anglicized Irish Surnames from Woulfe,” Mari ingen Briain meic Donnchada, http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/Woulfe/SortedByAnglicizedRoot_D1.shtml, with O Davoren as the Anglicized form dated to temp. Elizabeth I-James I, and listed under the header in Woulfe as Ó Dáb.oireann (Ó Dábhoireann), p. 471. Valdis O'Davoren is the client's legal/SCA mother, and her name was registered in September 1992 (note that there is a discrepancy in the spelling of the registered name and the submitter name). The client desires a female name.

The device appears to be colored in crayon, and this will be corrected.

The following submissions appear in the March 2013 Atenveldt Letter of Intent:

Commentary supplied by Alys Mackyntoish [AM], Aryanhwy merch Catmael [AmC], Ásfríðr Úlfvíðardóttir [AU], Brenna Lowri o Ruthin [BLoR], Dreux d'Anjou [DdA], Etienne Le Mons [ELM], Gawain of Miskbridge [GM], Gunnvor silfraharr [Gs], Jeanne Marie Lacroix [JML], Seamus mac Riain [SmR], Taran Wayward [TW] and Marta [MMM].

Aelia Musa (BoAtenveldt): NEW NAME CHANGE from Annora Wallace

Alaric Schweikle (Ered Sul): CHANGE OF HOLDING NAME from Aodhan of Twin Moons and NEW DEVICE CHANGE

Quarterly argent and vert, a smith's hammer surmounted by a key bendwise wards to base sable.

I'd suggest some internal detailing, especially around the crossing of the key and the hammer so you can tell which is surmounting which without having to reference the line art version. I am curious if this passes the Unity of Orientation rules as they are currently written. Is this arrangement attested in period?[ELM] I also find the position of the key strange. I think it would be okay if the two were in cross or in saltire, but this is just... non-heraldic style, I think.[Gs]

Alesia Thompson (Sundragon): NEW NAME

Alysaundre de Bordeaux (Twin Moons):NEW NAME

<Bordeaux> is rendered in a Latin letter of 1199 as <Burdegala> (http://epistolae.ccnmtl.columbia.edu/letter/1327.html). [AM]

Amaris le Fey (Tir Ysgithr): NEW NAME

Annabell Riant (BoAtenveldt): NEW NAME and DEVICE: Per chevron throughout sable and azure, two fleurs-de-lys inverted and a butterfly argent.

This per chevron line of division really needs to be steeper, as the line is supposed to be centered in its notional space, which in this case means centered on the fess line. Instead, the line of division stops at the fess line, making all of it in chief. This actually looks more like chapé, which should not be charged on the "shoulders":

  • This is just not period style. In the first place, the "chevron enhanced" is really more of a truncated "chape" and it is a solecism in period style to charge a "chape". [Liadain O'Dubhghaill, LOAR 05/1989]

  • Nor do we charge the shod part of a chapé or chaussé field. "It is not good style to charge the chape or chausse portion of a field. (Alisoun MacCoul of Elphane, LoAR 25 January 1987, p. 9) [Fenice d'Aix, LOAR 05/1996]

  • [W]e no longer allowed chapé sections of the field to be charged. [Riviere Constelle, Shire of, LOAR 09/2009]

If this was redrawn to be per chevron rather than chapé, the fleurs together with the butterfly will constitute the primary charge group, so the blazon seems correct: In armory with a divided field... [when] each of the charges is entirely in a single section of the field... the charges are collectively the primary charge group. This is true even when the bottom charge is drawn larger than the others, as this is common in period depictions. This is true even when one of the divisions contains semy of charges. This is true even if you use blazon terms like "in chief" or the line of division is blazoned as "enhanced". (http://heraldry.sca.org/laurel/sena.html#AppendixI) [Gs]
I agree with Orle's comments about the chevron. [ELM]

The device has been redrawn to correct the line of division. [MMM]

Annika Sveinsdóttir (Saint Felix): NEW DEVICE: Per saltire argent and azure, in pale two gouts and in fess two lizards tergiant counterchanged.

Ah! Actual medieval lizards rather than Native American ones! Kudos! Lizards are tergiant by default, so I make this: Per saltire argent and azure, in pale two gouttes and in fess two lizards counterchanged. [Gs]

Antonia Maria de Montoya (BoA): NEW DEVICE CHANGE: Per bend sinister wavy Or and pean, in chief three cinquefoils in bend sinister Or.

Arnóra hnappraz (Windale): NEW NAME and DEVICE: Argent, an acorn vert and on a chief double-arched purpure two pretzels argent.

The name construction is fine, both elements are also in Geirr Bassi. [Gs]

There is a Step from Period Practice with a chief double-enarched. [TW]

Alesia Thompson (Sundragon): NEW NAME

Arianwen Sweet (Tir Ysgithr): NEW NAME

Arnóra hnappraz (Windale): NEW NAME and DEVICE

Belle Drake (BoAtenveldt): NEW NAME

Beverly FitzAlan de Stirkelaunde (Ered Sul): NEW BADGE (resubmission from Kingdom): (Fieldless) A pigeon maintaining a lily slipped argent.

Bríán Hróbjartsson (BoAtenveldt): NEW NAME

Brighid ní Sheachnasaigh: NEW JOINT BADGE, with Aldric of Galway: Azure, a pithon involved in annulo contourny Or.

Cael Robertson: NEW NAME and DEVICE: Per pale argent and sable, a dolmen counterchanged.

Ceridwen merch Deykin: NEW NAME and DEVICE: Per pall inverted vert, azure and argent, in base a frog sable.

Christine atte Wode (Brymston): NEW NAME CHANGE from Þórdís Hrefnudóttir and NEW DEVICE: Or, an owl's head cabossed between three roses purpure and a bordure wavy azure.

Christopher Ravenhill (Twin Moons): NEW NAME

Clara Makkynnay (BofAtenveldt): NEW NAME and DEVICE: Purpure, a wildcat sejant gardant and chief urdy argent charged with three pansies purpure.

This is potenty, not urdy. [Yes. MMM] Also, this looks like a domestic cat, not a wildcat. Suggest a reblazon of: Purpure, a domestic cat sejant guardant and on a chief potenty argent three pansies purpure marked argent. Clear of Osanna Katzgraw von der Tann: Purpure, a winged cat sejant wings close licking its sinister forepaw, on a chief wavy argent three roses proper. (DC's of the wings and the tincture of the tertiaries).[ELM] Although the facial tufts could be a little more prominent and the stumpy tail a little more stumpy, this is a reasonable wildcat; wildcat or domestic, they'd still be checked against one another, and the blazon of wildcat is the one the client prefers. [MMM]
I'm having a hard time identifying the pansies. Sorry. [AU] Pansies should have five petals. These have only four. [BloR] Pansies have an unusual arrangement of petals, and the fifth petal is often shoved to the back, so that the upper rim is the only portion of the petal showing. [MMM]

Collette Marion Cooke: NEW NAME and DEVICE: Sable, on a cross argent five mullets azure, a bordure engrailed argent.

Daniel Evelgest (Twin Moons): NEW NAME and DEVICE: Sable, on a fess between three hourglasses argent, a roundel between an increscent and a decrescent sable.

A roundel between an increscent and a decrescent is a SFPP, but that's the only one here.[ELM]

"Evil Guest" plus the hourglasses and moon phases as markers of time passing suggest a claim to be Death.[Gs]

Donndubán mac Eógain: NEW NAME and DEVICE: Per chevron sable and vert, a chevron between two compass stars and a sword inverted argent.

Duncan Saint Claire: NEW NAME and DEVICE: Or, an axe and a sword in saltire sable, a bordure rayonny azure.

Eilidh MacMurtrie: NEW ALERNATE NAME, Clarisse Savoir

Elza Scarlet (Tir Ysgithr): NEW NAME

Gabriel Boyle (Sundragon): NEW NAME and DEVICE:Per bend sinister gules and argent, three beehives Or and a badger rampant sable.

The badger is not sable, he has white markings, all at the peripheries of the body so that the white parts disappear against the argent field. [GS]

I think it is still identifiable as a badger. Details like tail tips can have no contrast with the field so long as the critter is still identifiable.[JML]

Gwenfrewi of Abergavenny (Sundragon): NEW NAME and DEVICE: Argent, in pale three arrows inverted bendwise sable and on a chief azure three hearts argent.

Isabelle de Calais (Burning Sands): DEVICE RESUBMISSION from Laurel, September 2010: Azure, on a pile argent a lily purpure.

No conflicts found, but the pile needs to be drawn both longer and narrower. [AmC] This has been done.[MMM]

Ivar of Elsinore (Ered Sul): DEVICE RESUBMISSION from Kingdom, February 2013: Per pale gules and argent, a cross throughout barbed at the foot counterchanged, a chief sable.

The barb at the foot as drawn is going to be confused with a base. Why not MAKE it a base, then the blazon would be Per pale gules and argent, a cross throughout conjoined to a base counterchanged, a chief sable. [Gs]

Josselyn the Red (BoAtenveldt): NEW DEVICE: Per fess azure and Or, a lion dormant and a butterfly counterchanged.

I suggest an artist's note to center the charges in their compartments. [Gs]

I'll agree on the note to center them in their areas, but also give the artist some credit as to avoid "meatloafing" this lion in that note--we all know that is no mean feat.[TW]

Kára Kaladóttir: NEW NAME

Katrín Andsvarsdóttir (Burning Sands): NEW NAME and DEVICE: Argent, a brown bear proper and on a chief azure four mullets argent.

As noted on my page, <Andsvarr> comes from Lena Peterson's Nordiskt runnamnslexikon s.nn. <An(d)svarr/Ansurr/Assurr/Ǫssurr> (http://www.sofi.se/servlet/GetDoc?meta_id=1472). A couple of the cited runic inscriptions support this spelling, particularly U276 ontsuar from Uppland, Sweden ca. 1010-1040. [Gs]

Layla bint Sulieman al-Nahral-Urduni (Tir Ysgithr): NEW NAME CHANGE from Genevieve Gabrielle Plubel d'Avon

Livid le Coi (Sundragon): NEW NAME, DEVICE and BADGE: (device) Azure, a coi haurient argent marked Or and a base wavy argent.

(badge) (Fieldless) A polypus Or annulety azure.

I have seen this polypus someplace before! Nice work on the legs being spread evenly and not crossing. [Gs]

Mary de la Bere (BoAtenveldt): NEW NAME

Nice name! [Gs]

Mathghamhain Drake: NEW NAME

Mathias MacCooel: DEVICE RESUBMISSION from Laurel, September 2011

Morgan Fabell (Sundragon): NEW NAME and DEVICE: Argent, two axes crossed in saltire azure and in base a gunstone and a chief azure.

As Batonvert likes to remind us, two charges in saltire have to be crossed, and thus this word can be omitted from the blazon. [AmC]

Morgan MacDuff (BoAtenveldt): NEW DEVICE: Sable, a death's head within a dragon involved in annulo biting its tail argent.

Skulls are fairly rare in the period armorials I have seen, but of those we have, all that I have seen have the jawbone attached. Do we have any documentation of "death's head" as a heraldic shorthand for a jawless human skull? Otherwise, our default skull seems to be a human skull affronty. The only period depiction of a human skull without the jawbone I've seen is the 1503 Dürer engraving, which is an allegory on death, and not true heraldry. [Gs]

Still, the client's registered badge uses a jawless skull/death's head. Does that make the charge grandfathered to him, or not? [MMM]

It's probably grandfathered then. [Gs]

Qara Keiije (Brymstone): NEW NAME CHANGE from Hrefna Gandalfsdottir

Raimundus Castellano (BoAtenveldt): NEW NAME and DEVICE: Gules, a cross of Santiago and a bordure denticulata Or.

Coblaith's Crosses identifies the Cross of Santiago in the "Cross Flory" family along with the Cross Clechy--but "A cross clechy is significantly different from a cross fleury (July, 1990 LoAR) and from a Cross of Santiago (November, 2005 LoAR)." Which then clears Damiana al-Andalusiyya The following device associated with this name was registered in March of 2006 (via the Outlands): Gules, a Latin cross clechy within a bordure rayonny Or. [TW]
CONSIDER: Calontir, Kingdom of: Augmentation registered in February of 2008 (via Calontir): Purpure, a cross of Calatrava and a bordure Or. 1DC for the field, and 1 DC for line of division of the bordure. [TW]

Remy Riant: NEW NAME and DEVICE: Per bend sinister sable and azure, a fleur-de-lys inverted argent.

Robert MacNair (Twin Moons): NEW NAME and DEVICE: Erminois, three rams rampant sable.

Rosa Duvanova doch' Sychevna (BoAtenveldt): NEW NAME CHANGE from Rose Ella Duvanovicha doch' Sychevna and DEVICE RESUBMISSION from Laurel, December 2010; TWO NEW BADGES

Per pale argent and sable, two harpies close addorsed counterchanged.

(badge) Per fess argent and vert, three trees eradicated proper and a horned owl Or.

(badge) Per fess argent and azure, three trees blasted and eradicated sable and an owl argent.

(device) The harpy on the left is not counterchanged. It should be completely sable. The argent chest and field remove a large part of the identifying features of the harpy. [DdA]

I agree. Unfortunately, argent on argent gives zero contrast.[ELM]

Whoops...that was a mistake...didn't even catch it until you'd mentioned it. The problem has been fixed. [MMM]

(badge with owl Or) Given that period heraldic owls were sometimes drawn with or without "ear tufts", I would blazon this simply as an owl and leave the tufting to artistic detail. [Gs]

Rylan MacLean (Mons Tonitrus): DEVICE RESUBMISSION from Laurel, March 2012: Quarterly gules and argent, on a sun counterchanged a fleur-de-lys Or.

Sabiha bint Yuhanna al-Dimashqi (Twin Moons): NEW NAME

Simon de Rouen (Twin Moons): NEW BADGE: (Fieldless) A demi-maiden vested, maintaining a lyre and a rose slipped and leaved Or.

Tanne Atzler (BoAenveldt): DEVICE RESUBMISSION from Kingdom, April 2011: Sable, a pall inverted Or cotised erminois.

Tirion syn Khorliazh: NEW NAME

Tommaso Navarre de Verdello (Twin Moons): NEW NAME and DEVICE: Quarterly purpure and sable, a decrescent Or and three mullets in pale argent.

Wikipedia is not an acceptable source for documentation; and besides, it doesn't date the name to1393. Instead, the 1393 citation comes from the documentation for the byname that was provided to the submitter on FB:

There's a <Zanetus de Verdello> in col. 876 of Rerum Italicarum Scriptores ab anno aerae Christianae (vol. 19), (http://books.google.de/books?id=xqo-AAAAcAAJ), which is dated to I think 1393, if I've followed the entry back up to its correct starting point on col. 862. [AmC]

The blazon doesn't seem to explain the arrangement of the charges. The mullets in pale could *all* be within the decrescent. [ELM]

Not to mention that "in pale" means "aligned in a vertical row".[GM]

I'd suggest Quarterly purpure and sable, within a decrescent Or between two mullets in pale a third mullet argent. That removes the need to redraw for the in pale mullet failure.[Gs]

Wade Greenwall (BoAtenveldt): NEW NAME and DEVICE: Per pale vert masoned Or and argent masoned sable, a tower per pale argent and vert.

The following are returned by the Atenveldt College of Heralds for further work, March 2013:

Alesia Thompson (Sundragon): NEW DEVICE: Sable, on a plate a wolf's head erased contourny gules.

Conflict with Cassandra of the East Winds (reg. 03/1978), "Sable, on a plate, a flame gules." There is one DC for the type of tertiary. [\AmC]

I agree with the conflict cited by Sans Repose [TW]

RETURNED for conflict.

Christopher Ravenhill (Twin Moons): NEW DEVICE: Per bend sinister argent and vert, a raven sable.

Conflicts with: Ciothruadh Dubh: (Fieldless) A raven maintaining a spear bendwise sable. (Only DC is the field.) [ELM]

RETURNED for conflict.

Moira Fhionn (BoAtenveldt): NEW NAME

<Mór Fhionn> as cited by OSCAR is a conflict; the names are virtually identical in pronunciation. [AmC]

The record cited for <Moira> is a contributed record, not an Indexed record, and therefore is not reliable as documentation. When using the IGI Parish Records, only Index Records -- those drawn from actual documents -- are usable as documentation. Contributed records are not.
The submitter might want to consider the Anglicized Irish form <Mora> found s.n. Mor dated to 1541 in "Names Found in Anglicized Irish Documents," by Mari ingen Briain meic Donnchada (http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnglicizedIrish/Feminine.shtml). This might not solve the conflict problem with <Mór Fhionn>, however.
Is she most concerned with the meaning of <Fhionn> or with the sound? Because if it is with the sound, then I note that the byname <O Finn> appears in Mari's article dated to 1597-99 (http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnglicizedIrish/Masculine.shtml). <Mora O Finn> would be a fully Anglicized Irish name with the same sounds and might very well clear the conflict. [AM]

RETURNED for conflict.

Petyr flammam concipere (Granholme): NEW NAME

The given name is certainly not Latin; the Latin form of <Peter> is <Petrus>. [AmC]

The Latin phrase <flammam concipiere> is not a byname. A simple Wiki search would tell the non-Latin scholar that Gaius Valerius Catullus was a Roman poet of the Republican period, famous for his love poems.

There is no way that one can read the cited work, Words and the Poet, to even remotely suggest that this phrase is "acting as a dictum or alias", and it's certainly NOT Christian allegory, dealing with the passion of Greek Ariadne. The discussion turns on Catullus's Carmina 64, ll. 86-93 (http://www.thelatinlibrary.com/catullus.shtml#64):

Hunc simul ac cupido conspexit lumine uirgo
regia...
non prius ex illo flagrantia declinauit
lumina, quam cuncto
concepit corpore flammam
funditus atque imis exarsit tota medullis.

[No sooner did the royal virgin (Ariadne) gaze at him with glowing eye...
no sooner did she lower from him her incandescent eyes
than she conceived throughout her body a flame,
and totally, to the center of her bones, she burned.]

Unfortunately, nothing given here supports the use of the Latin phrase <flammam concipiere> as a name element for any period.[Gs]

RETURNED for incorrect name formation.

Robert MacNair : NEW BADGE: Erminois, a ram's head cabossed sable.

Conflicts with Magnus Jager, "Or, a ram's head cabossed sable enflamed gules." There is a DC for the field, but none for the enflaming. [AmC]

RETURNED for conflict.

Yes, there will be more Estrella War submissions in a few weeks--with luck, all those remaining will find their way to the April Letter of Intent!

Thank you all for your continuing hard work for the Atenveldt College of Heralds and the people of Atenveldt!
