ATENVELDT COLLEGE OF HERALDS 15 February 2016, A.S. L

LETTER OF PRESENTATION Kingdom of Atenveldt

Unto Their Royal Majesties Casca and Melissa; Baroness Genevieve de Lironcourt, Aten Principal Herald; Heralds in the Atenveldt College of Heralds; and to All Whom These Presents Come,

Greetings of the New Year from Marta as tu Mika-Mysliwy, Brickbat Herald and Parhelium Herald for the Kingdom of Atenveldt!

This is the combined January 2016 and February 2016 Atenveldt Letter of Presentation; it precedes the Letter of Intent with submissions considered for the next Letter of Intent.

Heraldry Hut: will be held NOT in February.

The following submissions appear in the January 2016 Letter of Intent:

Commentary provided by Christian Jorgensen af Hilsonger, ffride wlffsdotter, Jeanne Marie Lacroix, Maridonna Benvenuti, Seraphina Defino.

Anita de Challis (TM): NEW AUGMENTATION OF ARMS

Gules, a seeblatt and a chief doubly-arched Or, and as an augmentation on a canton gules a sun and a moon in her plentitude in pale within a bordure Or.

The name was registered February 2002. The device was registered December 2005. The Augmentation was awarded by TRM Craven and Elzbieta October 2014.

Golden Dolphin noted from SENA that “An augmentation that appears to be a display of independent armory, such as a charged canton or a single charged escutcheon, must also be evaluated as if the augmentation itself were a submission of independent armory for purposes of style, conflict, offense, and presumption....it must maintain good contrast with the field or charge that it is on.” Blue Mountain said “I would argue that good contrast isn't required but SOME contrast is. Change the bordure to argent and it would be fine style wise...” The client was informed of this but asks that the original submission be sent up. (I admit that of the two edges involved with lying on the field, one does have adequate contrast.)

Æsa Væna (Tir Ysgithr): NEW NAME and DEVICE
Per pale purpure and argent, two domestic cats sejant respectant counterchanged, on a chief vert an ivy vine Or.

The name is Old Norse. Æsa is a female given name found in “Viking Names found in Landnámabók,” Aryanhwy merch Catmael, http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/norse/landnamabok.html. The byname, “promising, hopeful, fair,” is found in “Viking Bynames found in the Landnámabók,” Aryanhwy merch Catmael, http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/norse/vikbynames.html. The client desires a female name and is most interested in the meansing and sound of the name. She will not accept Major changes to the name.

Ealhswith Einarskona (TM): NEW NAME

ffride wlffsdotter commented that the cited precedents date to 2003 (ie, The Old Norse byname for wife is kona (http://heraldry.sca.org/precedents/CompiledNamePrecedents/MaritalBynames.htmlFrancois le Flamme, November 2003), and so pre-date SENA. However, The Bynames of the Viking Age Runic Inscriptions by Lindorm Eriksson includes:Runestone DR 97 has "Þorvé Végauts kona", dated to the Viking Age, ca. 1000 - ca. 1050 (https://www.s-gabriel.org/names/lindorm/runicbynames/), and that a very similar name, Leofwen Gunnarskona, was registered last year with no comment about temporal or linguistic issues relating to the byname (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2015/03/15-03lar.html#123) .

Einarr fullspakr (TM): NEW NAME

Mateo de Jesus Esteban Gomez (TM): NEW NAME

Sebastian of Ered Sûl (Ered Sûl): NEW NAME and DEVICE

Gules, two griffins combatant and on a chief triangular Or a roundel gules.

Sebastian is a male given name found in “Spanish Names from the Late 15th Century,” Juliana de Luna, https://www.s-gabriel.org/names/juliana/isabella/MensGivenAlpha.html. The name for the Barony of Ered Sûl was registered/corrected March 1998. The client desires a male name and is most interested in the sound of the name. He will not accept Major changes to the name.

The following submissions are returned by the Atenveldt College of Herald, February 2016:

Brenna Knarrarbringa (BoA): NEW NAME and DEVICE

Per chevron gules and Or, two dragonflies in chevron Or and a beech tree eradicated proper.
“The given name Brenna was documented on the basis of an April 2000 precedent which says that Brenna is justifiable as a hypothetical Italian name; names combining Italian and Anglicized Irish are a step from period practice. We have revisited this 2000 precedent, and the registerability of the given name Brenna, on the Cover Letter of this LoAR. Effective henceforth, barring new support for Brenna as a period name, Brenna is no longer registerable...” (Letter of Acceptance and Return, September 2008)

The device submission seems reasonable, but it should be redrawn with a steep pitch to the line of division (and default dragonflies would have a palewise orientation – all the charges should be drawn larger, too).

The following submissions appear in the February 2016 Letter of Intent:

Beaune de la Sorse (Tir Ysgithr): NEW BADGE

Per fess argent and sable, four pallet couped at the line of division gules and a cubit arm issuant from base argent.

The name was registered May 1992.

The client initially intended to change her device, but the first attempt, Bendy indented and paly sable and Or., was returned for nonreproducibility in 2/1997 by Laurel, and a resubmission, Pale bendy sable and Or, a point pointed ploye' argent., was return for conflict in 3/2006 in-kingdom. She has decided to retain her device and try a completely-redesigned badge.

Ezekiel Crow (BoAtenveldt): NEW NAME

The name is English, with Ezekiel cited as a male given name for Ezekiel Florry, christened 23 October 15978 in Saint Clement Danes, Westminster, London, Batch C04160-5 (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J7M6-Z62). Crow is an English surname dated to 1556 in the christening name for John Crow in Elm, Cambridge, England, Batch C13534-2 (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N8LL-RQX).

The client desires a male name and will not accept Major changes to the name.

Faleena Camille de la Sol (Sundragon): NEW NAME CHANGE and NEW DEVICE CHANGE

Gules, a lion salient contourny queue-forchy argent within an orle of compass stars Or.

The client's currently-registered name is Faleena Camille (March 1982). The elements are grandfathered to her under SENA PN.1.g “The Grandfather Clause: In a new personal name submission, an individual may use name phrases already registered to them, even if that name phrase would no longer be allowed under the current rules.” The client would like to add a locative, del Sol, to her registered name. Given names similar to Faleena are found in Spanish. Clara Felina has a christening date of 1587 in Torroella de Montgri, Gerona, Spain, Batch C89234-1 (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F5N5-JD9); this woman's mother name was Falina. The surname Falina is found in the christening name for Pera Falina (male) in 1578 in Santa Paul, Gerona, Batch C89312-1.

The given name Camille is found as a spelling variant with Camila Salvo as a christening name in 1561 inSan Lorenzo, Valladolid, Batch C87108-1 (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FRZD-MQ7). Del Sol (“of the Sun”) is found in the christening name for Monice Del Sol in 1636 in San Antolin, Murcia, Spain, Batch C39277-2 (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FR8V-1JV). SENA Appendix A demonstrates double given name in late period; locative phrases as de X; and order as given + patronymic + locative. The client desires a female name, is most interested in the meaning of the name “of the sun,” and will not accep Major changes to the name.

If registered, the currently register device, Vert, in fess a lion queue-forchée salient to sinister and a stag rampant argent, in chief a compass star Or. (registered April 1983), is to be retained as a badge.

Jörg von den Hügeln (Tir Ysgithr): NEW NAME and DEVICE

Or, two halberds in saltire gules, overall a Great Dane statant sable.

The name is German, “George from the Hills.” This construction order is found in German in SENA Appendix A. Jörg is a male christening name dated to 1627 in Hengstfeld, Württemberg, Batch C91994-1 (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NCJZ-Y5Y). Hugeln is a christening name dated to 1626 for Georgious Hugeln in Evangelish, Freistett, Offenburg, Baden, Batch C93268-1 (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V41K-Q1T).

Von den is a Dutch locative phrase that is compatible with German; the client prefers a German form. The client wants a name name and most interested in the meaning and language/cultue of the name, late 15th and 6th C. German, “from the hills.” He will not accept Major changes to the name.

The arms of Phillip of Loch Shelldrake bear the same breed of dog, Per chevron throughout Or and argent, two Great Dane dogs' heads cabossed and a Great Dane dog passant to sinister sable., although there was much discussion back then in June 1983 (and more since) that the name was debateable. (Boarhound seems a period alternative, as in the reblazon for the badge of Anpliça Fiore.)

Hinrich von Bremen (BoA): NAME and DEVICE RESUBMISSION from Laurel, December 2014

Gules, a hart's head cabossed and on a chief Or three estoiles sable.

Originally su bmitted as Kevin the Wayfarer, documentation for his legal name Kevin was not included, nor were commenters able to document it to period. This is a complete redesign. The name is German. Hinrich is a 15th C. male given name found in “15th German Names from Mecklenburg: Hinrich,” Sara L. Uckelman (http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/german/hinrich-m.html). Bremen lies on the Weser River, and its 600-year-old town hall was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 (http://www.bremen-tourism.de/historic-bremen).
The original device submission, the same as in the resubmission, was returned for administrative reasons; that has been corrected.

Kitajima Ishirou Matchasu (GM): NAME RESUBMISSION from Laurel, November 2015

It was determined that while Matai is a Japanese form of the name Matthew, it is post-period. The client has decided to use the earlier form Matchasu as suggested by the CoA, a 16th-17th C. Japanese form of the Portuguese Matthias, found in Masaharu Anesaki's "The Fates of Some of the Leading Kirishitans Who Signed the Barberini Documents of 1620-21"(PIA 3.5; 247-50).

The client desires a male name.

Sitriuc liath mac Sinach (SD): CHANGE OF HOLDING NAME from Sitriuc of Atenveldt, May 2015 and RECONSIDERATION OF DEVICE, May 2015

Per chevron Or and vert, two pommes each charged with a triskelion of armored legs Or and a winged sea-fox naiant Or.
In a previous Letter of Acceptance and Return, the CoA suggested it would permit the name to be registered as the Iridh Gaelic Sitriuc liath mac Sinach ("Sitruic [the] gray-haired, Sinaig's son"), since previous submissions of color + animal name constructions ( Liathsionnach as “gray-haired/aged fox”) could not be justified, nor could a pattern of a descriptive byname as part of a patronym (as mac Sinaig Liath, “Sinaig [the] Gray-haired's son”). At the time the CoA could not make the change to Sitriuc liath mac Sinach because it was a major change, which the submitter would not allow, and a holding name was assigned in order to register his device.

The client will now accept this name in place of the holding name.

Aside from the need for redrawing of the original submission to more easily identify the monst in case, the client's local herald seems to have mistakenly colored his original submission wrong, so that it was blazoned as a winged sea-fox argent. We had two versions of the submission under consideration, and I requested that the one with the Or sea-fox be withdrawn, which it was and the argent one was subsequently registered. So it appears that both the local herald and I were mistaken, and this is the version that the client wants.

Tomaso Floreano (SD): DEVICE CHANGE RESUBMISSION from Laurel, March 2015
Or, in bend sinister a wooden malletproper and a quill pen, both bendwise, a bordure sable.

The previous return, Or, in bend sinister a wooden mallet bendwise inverted proper and a quill pen bendwise sinister, a bordure sable., had issues with unity of posture/orientation and for lack of clarity positions of the charges on the field. The axis of both charges is now clearly bendwise, and both are in their default orientations.

The following submissions were registered by the SCA College of Arms, December 2015:

Danielle Camera de Misericordia. Name and device. Per bend sinister argent and vert, three shamrocks and a dagger inverted counterchanged.
Danielle is the submitter's legal given name. Forms of this name like Daniela and Daniella can be found in Spain in the late 16th century, but the submitted spelling could not be found in Spain. However, it is found as an attested masculine name from 16th century Italy. Therefore, the submitter need not rely on the legal name allowance.
It was noted in commentary that a feminine instance of Danielle is found in France dated to 1573 in the FamilySearch Historical Records. However, the document image shows a post-period, printed form onto which the handwritten information from some other record was transcribed. Therefore, this particular instance may not be reliable and is not sufficient documentation for this name as a French name.
This name combines an Italian given name and Spanish bynames. This is an acceptable lingual mix under Appendix C of SENA.
Gilly Wede. Name and device. Gyronny gules and sable, a gillyflower argent between eight bees in annulo Or.
This design was well documented as an Individually Attested Pattern in late period English armory. Evidence was provided of the red and black gyronny with charges. Additionally, bees and gillyflowers were found in the same jurisdiction.
Gilly Wede. Badge. Per saltire gules and sable, a bee Or between four gillyflowers in saltire argent.
`Izza al-Zarqa'. Badge. (Fieldless) A horse's head erased contourny argent charged with a lotus blossom in profile purpure.
Johnathan Crusadene Whitewolf. Transfer of badge to Nichelle of Whitewolfe. Quarterly sable and gules, a demi-wolf rampant erased argent.
Mark the Just. Device. Sable, a hanging balance and on a chief embattled argent a rod per pale gules and sable.
Nichelle of Whitewolfe. Acceptance of transfer of badge from Johnathan Crusadene Whitewolf. Quarterly sable and gules, a demi-wolf rampant erased argent.
Pól Ó Coileáin. Name and device. Or, a bend sinister sable between a hawk striking contourny and a drawn bow reversed with arrow nocked azure.
Submitted as Pól mac Coileáin, the attested Anglicized Irish byname O Collaine and its corresponding standard Gaelic form Ó Coileáin are derived from a descriptive term meaning "the whelps" rather than a given name. Therefore, this byname cannot be used to form a Gaelic patronym. However, there is a similar given name, Cuilén or Culén, from which the byname mac Cuilein or mac Culein can be formed. We have changed the name to Pól Ó Coileáin to register this name, as it is the closest to what was submitted. If the submitter prefers one of the mac forms mentioned above, he can submit a request for reconsideration.
Tobias Wade. Device. Gyronny gules and Or, a fleur-de-lys and an orle azure.

The following submissions were returned by the CoA for further work, December 2015:

Ceallach Colquhoun. Badge. Per bend sinister gules and argent, a door argent banded, handled and charged with two arrows in saltire sable, and a dragon sejant affronty, wings displayed and head to dexter gules.

This device is returned for redraw, for violating SENA A2C2 which states "Elements must be drawn to be identifiable." As depicted, the arrows on the door appear to be part of the door and not independent charges. The arrows are similar in color and width to the details on the door, leading commenters to see them as part of the door. Changing the tincture of either the details or the arrows or making the arrows bolder with larger heads and fletchings would improve identifiability.
